Located just 45 minutes south of Wilmington, NC is the charming coastal seaport of Southport. Originally incorporated in 1792 as Smithville, the name was later changed to Southport in 1887. It is located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and has a year round population of nearly 3000 people. With 200 year old live oak trees and Victorian homes, Southport’s allure is undeniable. The five block downtown area includes antique and collectible shops, restaurants, coffee shops, banks and other professional offices. You can take a leisurely stroll through the shops or along the waterfront… dine at the waterfront restaurants or just relax on the riverfront swings. Southport has also been the location for many TV series such as Under the Dome and Revenge. But it is probably best known most recently as the setting for Safe Haven. Other films include I Know What You Did Last Summer, Mary and Martha, Nights in Rodanthe, Summer Catch, Crimes of the Heart and A Walk to Remember. Southport is rich in history and is the home to the NC Fourth of July Festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Nearby is the Southport-Ft Fisher Ferry. Take a short, scenic ferry ride to Ft-Fisher and the Carolina Beach area where you can enjoy the Ft-Fisher Aquarium and other beach activities. Also nearby is the Bald Head Island Ferry Landing that takes you away to the private island of Bald Head.
